Qingming is not just a blue time for remembrance, but also a green time for fun.
Chinese Qingming Festival is also known as Tomb Sweeping Day or Pure Brightness Festival. As a traditional Chinese festival, it’s the most significant day for people to commemorate and honor ancestors. In 2015, it falls on April 5. And Chinese people will have three days off from April 4 to April 6.
While Qingming is a special day to pay respect to deceased relatives and ancestors, it also bears a seasonal symbol. It has a close relation with agriculture. Because after the festival, temperatures begin to rise and it rains more often, indicating the coming of Late Spring. Then it is the best time for plowing and sowing.
Various Traditional Activities During Qingming Festival
As a time of sadness and happiness, Chinese people attach great importance to the festival since ancient times and have invented many kinds of celebration activities. Many of them such as sweeping Tombs, taking a spring outing, flying kites, etc. are passed on from generation to generation although some have disappeared.
Among different observances, sweeping Tombs is the most important and most formal. Chinese people will clear the wild grasses around ancestors’ tombs, clean the dust and add some soil to show care for the deceased relatives and revolutionary martyrs. Apart from that, people also offer food, tee, wine and chopsticks along with burning paper resembling money, in the hope that the dead don’t lack money and can live a good life.
In modern cities, the practice has become very simple: presenting flowers instead of burning joss paper accessories, firecrackers or incense.
During the spring the weather gets warmer, flowers begin to blossom and everything takes a new look. It’s a perfect time and opportunity to take a spring outing. During the outing, Chinese people can enjoy the beautiful scenery in nature and have fun. The activity brings infinite fun to life and help people keep a healthy body and mind as well.
This activity is very popular among children. What’s special about flying kites is that the kites are in different shapes. Some are in the shapes of animals. Some are like characters from Chinese history. It always brings a lot of laughter among Chinese people.
Besides the above observances, there are still many. For example, after the festival Chinese people begin their work of plowing. Some people hang willow branches on their gates to help ward off the evil spirit. Furthermore, it is also a time when couples begin courting.
